The best and quick way to remove unused images from WordPress blog is by using a plugin. Here we got two awesome plugins, that helps to delete unused images in a fly.

Before using these plugins it is recommended to backup your upload folder manually by using FTP client.

1. Upload Janitor Plugin

Upload Janitor helps to cleanup upload folder by deleting the unused files or images that are no longer required. List of all unused images will be displayed and you can delete them after taking a backup.

PS: Before Deleting unused images, upload janitor will automatically backup the files in upload folder as a “tar” file. As original file paths are also included, it will be easy to restore them back if anything goes wrong, pretty good plugin.

2. Delete Unused Images (DUI) Plugin

This plugin helps to automatically remove the unused images that are uploaded in your posts and pages. It is difficult to detect and remove unused images manually, hence simply download and install this plugin to get your job done without any risk.

After installing this plugin you need to do some couple of things, which are clearly explained in the link posted below. Follow the steps carefully, otherwise you would end-up deleting the most useful images.

If you don’t wish to use any plugin or don’t trust the above mentioned plugins, then you can delete unused images using any FTP client.

  • Simply, login to FileZilla (or any other FTP client) and navigate to WordPress installation folder.
  • Now open wp-content folder and you will find a directory name “Uploads”.
  • Open it and you can see all uploaded images arranged in “Monthly Folders”.
  • Check those folders manually and if you find any unused image, delete it.
  • This is a critical task and is recommended only if you have less number of images.

    You can also delete images by going to media from dashboard and delete all images manually present in unattached tab.

      That does not delete the mini size images available inside your image folder.

        Upload Janitor to remove unused images from upload folder. It install smoothly and able to show the unused image but whenever i try to delete these images, send me on the login screen.
